The city of Riihimäki got its Circular Economy Village during the year of 2016. The whole concept of the Circular Economy Village is unique, both nationally and internationally. Watrec designed a solution to manage the biowaste of the village. The Riihimäki Biogas Plant is the biggest plant this far that Watrec has delivered with a capacity of 75.000 tonnes annually. What makes the plant stand out is its ability to treat mechanically separated organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) alongside biowaste and sludge. This means that the plant will be able to transform OFMSW, as well as biowaste and sludge, to bioenergy.
Treatment of OFMSW is possible due to new state of art technology developed by Watrec Ltd.´s excellent R&D department and the company’s strive to always improve and increase even further the efficiency of its plant technology. Also, Watrec's odor treatment technology allows the plant to be almost odor-free to outside of the plant.
The produced biogas in the Riihimäki's plant will be inserted in the Gasum's nationwide gas network where it can be utilized further.
